Uniforms & workwear

India

Farid Bawa, Bonne Reijn, and Augie Austin travelled across India to document uniforms and everyday workwear. Their ongoing research project, Radio Club, explores garments across a wide spectrum, from religious attire and wrestling outfits to factory uniforms and fishermen’s wear. Beyond function, these clothes carry stories of faith, labour, and pride, and in some cases trace the legacy of a colonial past. While many traditional uniforms have been replaced by contemporary clothing, those that remain reveal layered histories of heritage, adaptation, and resilience.

Our project approaches these outfits as living documents, shaped by use, place, and memory. In doing so, it opens up a wider conversation around identity, work, and the cultural histories embedded in everyday outfits.

At Sassoon Dock , many fishermen and sellers wear football and cricket jerseys to work. Made for heat and movement, the shirts are both practical and personal, bringing favourite teams and local clubs into the pace of the dock.
